How Long Do Vape Pods and Coils Last? When to Change Them and How to Make Them Last Longer
Pods and coils are the consumable part of a vape. They wear out, and most performance complaints trace back to a pod or coil that should have been changed a week ago. This guide gives realistic lifespans, the signs to watch for, and the handful of habits that make the biggest difference.
How long they usually last

Someone using 2 ml a day through a pod kit will typically change the pod every two weeks. Someone using 8 ml a day through a sub-ohm tank may change the coil weekly.
Signs a pod or coil is finished
- Burnt or harsh taste that does not go away after a few puffs. This is the cotton wick scorching and the pod is done.
- Muted or changed flavour. Residue on the coil dulls flavour before it burns.
- Less vapour at the same setting.
- Gurgling, spitting or leaking that filling and cleaning does not fix.
- Dark or crusted cotton visible through the pod, or a coil that looks black.
If a brand-new pod tastes burnt on the first puff, it was not primed; see below. If it tastes burnt after a day, the power setting is too high for the coil or the liquid is not suited to it.
What shortens coil life
- Running dry. Firing a pod with the wick exposed burns the cotton instantly. Refill when the liquid is a third full, not empty.
- Not priming. A new pod or coil needs 5 to 10 minutes standing upright after filling so the cotton is saturated before the first puff. Many coils are ruined in their first minute.
- Chain vaping. Long, back-to-back puffs do not give the wick time to re-saturate. A few seconds between puffs makes a real difference.
- Too much power. Every coil has a recommended wattage range printed on it or in the pod's documentation. Sitting at the top of the range or above it halves coil life.
- Sweet, dark and high-VG e-liquids. Sweeteners caramelise on the coil and thick liquids wick slowly in small pods. Dessert and custard flavours are the usual culprits. Fruit, mint and tobacco flavours with a 50/50 VG/PG ratio are gentlest on small pods. Our PG vs VG guide explains ratios.
- Wrong nicotine type for the coil. High-strength salts in a sub-ohm coil, or very low-strength freebase in a tiny pod, both lead to heavier use and faster wear.
How to make pods and coils last
- Prime every new pod or coil for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Start at the bottom of the coil's wattage range and move up only if needed.
- Keep the pod at least a third full.
- Take shorter puffs with a pause between them.
- Choose 50/50 or 60/40 VG/PG liquids for small pods, and go easy on very sweet flavours.
- Wipe the pod contacts and the battery connection weekly so condensation does not cause misfires.
- Do not wash a coil or pod with the coil built in. Rinsing a tank or an empty pod shell with warm water is fine; wet cotton and coils do not recover.
Disposing of used pods and coils
Used pods contain plastic, metal, cotton and traces of e-liquid, and prefilled pods may contain a small battery. They should not go in kerbside recycling. Put used pods and coils in general waste, and take batteries and battery-containing devices to a council e-waste or battery drop-off point. Check your council's website for locations. Keep used pods away from children and pets until they are disposed of, because residual liquid still contains nicotine.
