General Vaping Guide

Using and Maintaining Your Vape Device

For safe and effective use, all vape devices must be operated and maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions and battery safety guidelines. This guide outlines general use instructions for tank and pod systems, along with information about coils, battery care, charging, and common maintenance tips.

General Guide

Turning Your Vaporiser On or Off

Most devices turn on or off with a rapid press of the fire button (3 or 5 clicks). As of 2025, all vaping devices sold in New Zealand must include an automatic shut-off feature and a child safety mechanism. Refer to the user manual for instructions specific to your device.

Tank Devices

Priming New Coils

Before using a new coil, apply a few drops of E-Liquid directly into the coil to pre-saturate the cotton. Use 1 drop for small coils (e.g. GS Air), or 3–4 drops for larger coils (e.g. SMOK, EC Head). After filling the tank, let it sit upright for 10–15 minutes to prevent dry hits or coil damage.

Replacing Coils

Coils are consumables and should be replaced every 1 to 4 weeks depending on usage. A burnt taste, reduced vapour, or discolouration on the cotton are signs that the coil should be replaced. Always follow the coil's printed wattage range for optimal use.

Filling the Tank

To refill, open the tank (usually top-fill) and pour E-Liquid between the glass wall and the central chimney. Avoid pouring into the centre airflow tube. For older bottom-fill tanks, remove the tank, invert it, unscrew the base, and fill carefully along the wall. Let the filled tank rest upright for 10–15 minutes before use.

Setting the Correct Wattage

Each coil lists a recommended wattage range. Operating below this range may cause weak vapour or flooding. Exceeding the range may burn the cotton. For example, a coil marked “15–30W” should only be used within that wattage band.

Temperature Control Mode (Optional)

Some devices offer temperature control (TC) modes that adjust power based on wire type:

  • Ni: Nickel
  • Ti: Titanium
  • SS: Stainless Steel (can also be used in wattage mode)

Incorrect settings may cause coil failure. If unsure, use standard wattage mode.

Using the Device

To activate, press and hold the fire button while inhaling. Gurgling, spitting, or weak vapour may indicate low wattage, oversaturation, or a loose coil. If these issues occur:

  • Ensure the coil is correctly seated
  • Verify wattage settings are within the recommended range
  • Clean the tank and mouthpiece (remove coil before rinsing, and dry fully before reuse)

Pod Devices

Refillable Pod Systems

Refillable pod systems have built-in coils and must be replaced when the coil degrades. Pods are not intended to be opened or serviced.

  • After filling, allow the pod to sit for 5–10 minutes before use
  • If a burnt or dry taste occurs, replace the pod
  • Do not use when empty; refill or replace promptly
  • Store upright to reduce leaking or condensation
  • Dispose of used pods responsibly

Prefilled Pod Systems

Prefilled pods come sealed with E-Liquid and are not refillable. These are designed for single-use.

  • Replace the pod when depleted or if vapour becomes weak or burnt
  • Do not attempt to refill or modify prefilled pods
  • Store upright to prevent leaks
  • Dispose of empty pods in accordance with local waste guidelines

Charging and Battery Safety

Internal Battery Devices

Use the provided USB cable with a compatible adaptor (≤1 amp, 5 volts). Avoid using fast chargers, USB 3.0 ports, or phone chargers unless rated safe for vaping devices. Charge under supervision and disconnect once full.

External Battery Devices

Devices using removable lithium-ion batteries (e.g. 18650) should be charged in an external battery charger. This provides better voltage control and reduces risk of imbalance or overheating.

Battery Safety

  • Never carry loose batteries — use a battery case
  • Do not use batteries with torn wraps, dents, or exposed metal
  • Keep away from heat, water, and conductive items like coins or keys
  • If a battery becomes hot, leaks, or malfunctions, stop use immediately

Married Batteries

Devices that use multiple external batteries should use “married” cells: same brand, model, and age, always charged and discharged together. This helps ensure balanced performance and minimises safety risks.
